State Medical Examinations

As a state examination program, medical studies in Germany are completed with a state examination regulated by the Medical Licensing Regulations (ÄAppO) - the Medical Examination. This is divided into three sections. Here in Düsseldorf, the curriculum therefore consists of three qualification phases, each of which concludes with a section of the Medical Examination. The Medical Intermediate Examination, which is completed in Düsseldorf at the end of the 3rd year of study, formally corresponds to the First Section of the Medical Examination (M1).

Second Part (M2)

The 5th year of study concludes with the Second Section of the Medical Examination (M2), a written examination that is administered uniformly throughout Germany. It contains knowledge relevant to your later work as a physician. The focus is on the practical requirements for physicians, the most important clinical pictures as well as interdisciplinary and problem-oriented issues.

Admission requirement
The prerequisite for admission to the Second Section of the Medical Examination (M2) is successful participation in the block final examinations of the 4th and 5th year of study: at least 60% of the maximum achievable points must be obtained in each of the block final examinations. In addition, you must achieve at least 60% of the achievable points in that subject in each subject. For subjects taught over more than one block of study, this 60% refers to the total achievable subject points of all relevant block final examinations.

Application and timetable
The application for admission to the Second Section of the Medical Examination (M2) including instructions can already be downloaded from the websites of the State Examination Office (M2) approximately two months before the actual application deadline (January 10 and June 10 respectively).

Third Part (M3)

You complete your medical studies with the Third Section of the Medical Examination (M3). This takes place over two days and is designed to be oral-practical. It includes patient examinations and presentations as well as oral examinations in groups. Passing the Third Section of the Medical Examination marks the successful completion of your medical studies.
